Brief description:

Bertha Scholarships for Social Innovators in Africa: Candidates who are dedicated to social innovation and entrepreneurship are eligible to apply for the Bertha Scholarship, which pays for either the full or a portion of the tuition for the MBA and MPhil in Inclusive Innovation programs offered by the UCT Graduate School of Business.

Candidates who are aligned to the Bertha Centre’s core priority areas, including Innovative Finance, Inclusive Healthcare Innovation, and Education Innovations, are of particular interest to the Bertha Centre.

Eligibility:

The criteria used for selection of Bertha Scholars are:

  • Candidates need to either be citizens of South Africa or Africa, or have been permanent residents of South Africa or Africa for at least one full year.

    Candidates are required to have launched or worked in an entrepreneurial, social, or environmentally conscious business, or to have worked on socially innovative or environmentally sustainable strategies inside an organization for a minimum of one year. In the event that you have an interest in one of the focus areas, it is highly recommended that you have prior expertise in the relevant domains, as well as a track record of investigating or launching innovative techniques within the relevant industries.

    Candidates are required to display a high moral character, a robust entrepreneurial drive, a track record of action, qualities of leadership, characteristics of social activism, and a dedication to the long-term sustainable development of emerging economies.

    Candidates are required to demonstrate, in the form of an essay that they have submitted, how enrolling in the degree program at this point in their careers will assist them to have a greater effect and how it will contribute to the broader process of value creation for society.

    Candidates must demonstrate some need for the scholarship, either through previous work experience, personal background, or demonstrated commitment to start a social venture, all of which make it a significant burden for the candidate to self-fund the degree program.
