American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship

Brief description: 

American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship: The American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is open to academically talented students from outside the United States who have their sights set on earning a bachelor’s degree in the United States and who are committed to promoting constructive civic and social change. It is designed for students who plan to enhance under-resourced and underprivileged communities in their native country after they have completed their studies abroad and returned home.

Target group:

International students from any country who are not citizens of the United States, permanent residents of the United States, or dual citizens of the United States and another country are eligible to apply for the scholarships.

Scholarship value/inclusions/duration:

All expenses that are payable to AU are covered by the AU EGL scholarship (full tuition, room and board). The scholarship does not pay for non-billable fees like mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets, or other incidental costs (about $4,000 in total).

It can be renewed for up to four years of undergraduate education, provided that the recipient maintains excellent academic achievement throughout that time.


Preference will be given to:

  1. Students from diverse and underrepresented cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as international students who have surmounted numerous barriers and challenges.
  2. For 9th-12th grades, a minimum 3.8 GPA equivalent (or being in the top 10% of the graduating class) is required.
  3. A demonstrated dedication to leadership, volunteerism, community involvement, and helping people in their native nation.
  4. Students with any of the following: 95+ TOEFL iBT (all subscores must be 20 or higher); paper-based TOEFL subscores of 24+ (taken after May 31, 2017); 7.0+ IELTS (all subscores must be 6.0 or higher); 33 minimum SAT Reading Subscore; 29 minimum ACT English; 65 minimum PTE; 120+ Duolingo (all subscores must be 110 or higher); or Cambridge Assessment English score of 185 or higher. Each subscore must be at least 169.
  5. Students who are still in secondary/high school and will graduate in June 2023.
  6. Important: IB students should intend to graduate with a full IB diploma that includes at least three HL subjects. Students enrolled in the British A-Level system must achieve at least three A levels and complete 13 years of study by August 2023.

You are NOT eligible to apply if:

  • You were born in the United States, you have lived in the United States permanently, or you have citizenship in both the United States and another nation.
  • You are now enrolled in any post-secondary studies at another university in either your native country or the United States, or you have already began such studies.
  • You finished high school in a year that was earlier than the application year.

Application instructions:

You must apply and finish the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship application, the Common or Coalition Application, and the international admissions process by 15 December  (the priority deadline), or by 15 January at the very latest, in order to be considered for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship. Applicants to the AU EGLS program are required to submit their applications via the Regular Decision process by August. Do not submit an Early Decision application (ED).
